K J was born overseas (Kuwait?) and educated in Singapore and the UK. Anyway, the concept of politics in Malaysia is to get elected into power to maintain the status quo, not something as mundane as serving the Rakyat....we have the paid civil servants to do that. I think we should be setting criteria like whether the politician is able to protect the Rakyat from both external and internal threats, able to give the Rakyat equal opportunities to prosper (ie. enable the poor to get out of the poverty trap and, yes... let the rich get richer!!), and have high moral and ethical standards to prevent themselves and others (cronies, family and paid servants) to steal from the Rakyats' funds.
Pax.

Re: KL/PJ Made Up Of Imports

Pax,

Erm I think it's to protect things like KJ in Rembau..I mean is he even reallY from there? dunno if he was born there.
I think Tony'case should be ok if he has been here for over 10 years.
But like many commenters have said, lots of ppl in KL are from outstation.
Yet, that does not mean we lack talent.
I can think of a few ppl from PJ that are quite good candidates except they may not be interested in politics per se.
Their parents too are "outsiders" but they were born here.
We don't want opportunists to exploit the system like politicians just picking and choosing seats. How many really know/care about the community they purport to represent?
---
Oster -- yes local council elections are preferred. about federal Mps, they should ideally come up with legislation that will protect a community's interest. Eg, let's say pollution is a problem then come up with a better law, or before voting in parliament try to dialogue with the community. How many ppl do that? Idealistic? Hmm..I think it's not hard....
---
PJU Voter -- Yeah, I think Chin TOng is definitely a better candidate....Although Subang is a bit far from Damansara....
---
Ironic Law -- I agree KL/PJians "chicken" mentality contributed to the imports...
Off tangent a bit to Ipoh, why would Ipoh ppl vote for Kit Siang? Just 'cos he is a superstar?
----
Dengki -- You are right.
----
Oster -- You are right too. But Tony is not from PJ but Singapore, famous for being kiasu and kiasi. Just look at Tony's blog these days...Much support for Anwar? SPoke out against Altantuya? But then Tony is very busy "serving his constituents"...He even snickered at a voter's complaint...
----
EK -- Regarding "local", very simple, born here or have been here for X number of years?
---
EL -- KJ? SIngapore?

Re: KL/PJ Made Up Of Imports

Jed,interesting thoughts from you. Are you suggesting that we should change the Constitution to prohibit eligible Malaysians from seeking public office in a constituency of their choosing? How to justify this if we believe in democracy? The choice is always with the electorate, notwithstanding that they had not been given the opportunity to make wise choices in the last few decades.
Pax.

Re: KL/PJ Made Up Of Imports

Restricting candidacy to home-grown voters is not really good because:
1.It restricts the talent pool. What if a constituency just so happen to produce two very competent people?
2.The unevenness of population within constituency means that larger constituency that may have larger talent pools contribute less. Just look at the US Senate with its 2 Senators per state rule. It produced Ted "the internet is like a series of tubes" Stevens of rural Alaska.
3.It restricts the expression of the voters, who do not necessarily mind a local or non-local dude running, but just his competency. It's essentially like the Proton monopoly, which restricts choice.
4.Federal representation should not be about overtly local issues. The reason why restriction to local people may seem like a good idea is because voters (especially KL voters who can't vote in state legislators) can only vote for their MP as a way of shaping policy, and thus longkang issues get pushed on the MPs as well, making them very local-issues-centric. The real solution to that is to institute local elections instead.
cheers

Re: KL/PJ Made Up Of Imports

Chin Tong is from Subang Jaya. Yes, of course it's better to have a local born people to represent us in parliament or the state legislative council.
In fact, the ideal case is to have a CAPABLE and TALENTED local born people to represent us.
What I'm trying to say is if the local people is not up to standard, what's the point to have local parliamentarian who doesn't help?

2.) What if we don't have a suitable candidate from local?
I'm not saying there is no talent from local but how about no one keen to be politician at that time?
Then, what choice do we have? I don't know about you,
but I certainly will go for a candidate whom I think is the best person that time regardless of where the candidate from.

3.) Now, let's look at it this way. You say you are "local" born, fair.
My next question is how long you have been "local"? Since your great great grandfather time?
That is about 100 hundred years ago? Ok, then I moved into your "place" 3 years ago.
I started to join local social activities and learn and mix with your culture since then.
I started to build my career and family there. I started to contribute to build the society.
After 15 years, my next generation grows up.
Can you say at that time that you are "local" and I'm not local just because you are there for 115 years and I am there for 18 years only?
You still think that you are the "owner" of the land because you are there 100 years before me by ignoring all my contribution last 18 years?
Do you think this is fair to me?
(comment: This is my same argument for the 'Malay Supremacy', you can delete this comment if you want.)

4.) Next, we have to look at our political system.
The party who has the majority of seats will have the executive power and become the government.
That is very important note for you to decide who you should vote.
Definitely, you can vote for a candidate who is good to your local community.
However, do you consider the broad benefit of whole state/country?
That's why sometimes you have to choose "party" instead of "person".
I guess this is why the Penangites wants to kick KTK out. :-)

Generally speaking, to me it's not really a big concern to have an "outsider" MP/ADUN.
The bottom-line is the quality and attitude of the representative.
Let's argue about this.

Thanks,

EK

Re: KL/PJ Made Up Of Imports

Tyu, Hannah is from Selangor..It's close enough...We are not so anal like Tony Pua..

Re: KL/PJ Made Up Of Imports

well... where should we put KJ then??

jed, i've seen you keep on talking about buying a piece of land in kelantan. are going to buy one?? if i'm not mistaken, the ruling actually was made by the british in the early of the last century... that time, kelantanese being busy selling their land to 'outsiders'. then british impose the act... most of those arabs came and buy those lands... then after the act imposed, lots of 'em had change their name, forgone their syed, sheikh title...

Re: KL/PJ Made Up Of Imports

hey Jed, Hannah is from Subang Jaya, Not PJ, she's also an outsider if she runs for PJU :P

Re: KL/PJ Made Up Of Imports

KB Guy

We don't most of the time.
There is no or llittle discrimination when it comes to cari makan, biz, etc
But if u want to represent us, then at least be born here?

Re: KL/PJ Made Up Of Imports

Hannah is prob a better choiice for PJU MP but sadly she is not loaded like Tony?

Re: KL/PJ Made Up Of Imports

I mean looking at the issue beyond tony, i think it's only "fair" that soemone who wants to be represent a community should at least be born there or lived there after X number of years.
Why should KLians/PJians give thess opportunists a free ticket to parliament?
I am surprised Penang voted for so many outsiders but they must be pissed off with Koh Tsu Koon.
I have no plans to be an MP/ADUN.
